Spartans Clinch 5th Consecutive League Championship After looking at the final score, nobody would have guessed that Blair High School trailed La Cañada by only three after the opening quarter. But the visiting Spartans went on a tear in the second quarter, which put the game away en route to a 74-48 victory and its 50th consecutive Rio Hondo League win. The Spartans (20-4, 8-0 in league), who clinched their fifth consecutive league title and Coach Tom Hofman’s 16th in 20 seasons, only lead 17-14 after the first quarter. However, they exploded for 27 in the second and only allowed the Vikings to score five to take a commanding 44-19 halftime lead on the road and never looked back. Senior center Rhett Anderson finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans, who are ranked No. 3 in this week’s CIF Division III-AA poll. Junior Adam Malik recorded 22 points and nine rebounds, while his older brother, senior Abe Malik, pitched in with a solid 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Senior Andrew Gauthier, Jackson Ridd and senior Eric Scott each hit a three pointer. Scott also recorded four rebounds and an assist. Senior Josh Lelo had two points and dished off three assists, while Garrison Grimes and added three steals and three assists. LC 76, San Marino 37 — The Spartans held a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and a commanding 31-1 advantage in the second quarter last Friday evening.
