Heads Up!
Be My Valentine
By Sue Stauffer

Celebrate love. Be romantic. Renew your vows of devotion to your loved one. Send flowers and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. Be sentimental. It’s Valentine’s Day!

Can you recall the circumstances that brought you to that special relationship that resulted in love? Many people have a story as to how they met their spouse. Some of these stories are unique and could definitely qualify as “fate” bringing two people together. This is the case of a dear friend of mine who met her new husband in an unusual circumstance. She had moved from La Cańada Flintridge and relocated to a new area after the death of her husband. She had not been in the new location for very long, so she didn’t really have any established friendships. She was alone and grieving, thinking that she would never meet anyone she would ever love again. Knowing that she must socialize and get some exercise, she joined a country club and decided to learn to play golf. She dined at the club frequently, often alone, and became friendly with some of the personnel. Coincidently, another club member who had recently lost his wife was also a favorite of the staff. Finally, one of the managers approached my friend and asked her if he could give her telephone number to the gentleman. She said yes, thinking “why not? I have nothing to lose.” As you may have guessed, they had coffee, started dating and are now married. Even though they were neighbors living only a few blocks from each other, they may have never met if a tenderhearted acquaintance hadn’t decided to play cupid. Kismet!

The single mother of another of my dear friends has another tale of finding romance. She loved to dance! There was a gentleman who knew her who also loved to dance. He kept asking her out on dates to go dancing. She kept refusing, thinking that she didn’t want to get involved with anyone again. Finally, the northeastern winter weather set in and the snow came down, creating nasty driving conditions. The gentleman, knowing her reluctance to drive in the snow, called one Sunday morning and offered to drive her to church. She gladly accepted. “Now for the rest of the story,” as Paul Harvey would say. This was the beginning of a new romance, and to this day they are still dancing, twirling and whirling into their twilight years.

We never know when or why we fall in love with someone, but we do, and Valentine’s Day is the time to celebrate this unexplained human emotion that is so powerful and lasting that it has been the source of stories, poems and songs since the beginning of time. Keep your love alive and remember, “love grows and knows no age or boundaries!” Happy Valentine’s Day!
