Pasadena Humane Society Benefit Raises Record Funds Any way you sliced it, the animals had the advantage on April 24 when the Pasadena Humane Society hosted its annual golf and tennis benefit, “Doglegs, Birdies & Eagles,” at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Not only did the day-long event attract the most participants ever in its seven-year history — some 160 golf and tennis players — it also raised nearly $143,000 for the lost, injured and abandoned animals in the shelter’s care—another record. “It was tons of fun,” said board member Gillan Abercrombie. “All of the people are there for the same reasons: helping find homes for abandoned animals and to raise awareness regarding animal welfare.” The tournament was presented by longtime Pasadena Humane Society supporters Nutro Products, Inc. and Wells Fargo. Other sponsors of the event included Unified Western Grocers, Community Bank, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Southern California, Dreyer’s Ice Cream, Meyer & Allen Architects, Associates, Planners; UBS and Advantage Ford Lincoln- Mercury, which offered a Lincoln Navigator as a hole-in-one prize. “We cannot thank our sponsors and participants enough for their support of the shelter through this benefit,” said Event Chairman Richard Goodspeed of La Cañada Flintridge. “Their generous contributions will make a tremendous difference in the lives of the animals at the Pasadena Humane Society and in the communities it serves.” Funds raised will provide food, shelter and medical care for the nearly 11,000 animals taken in every year by the humane society. These funds also help support a variety of adoption and education programs. Golfers were invited to participate in a putting contest prior to teeing off. The contest was judged by meteorologist Dallas Raines of KABC-Channel 7 News, who also delivered an impromptu weather report for the day. The day’s events also included a mixed doubles round-robin tennis tournament—coordinated by PHS board member Weta Mathies. The men’s winner was Clif Allen and the women’s winner was Mindy Sato. The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, now in its 103rd year, is an independent, donor supported, non-profit organization serving La Cañada Flintridge and other cities in the West San Gabriel Valley. The Pasadena Humane Society is an open-door shelter. It accepts and cares for every animal that comes to it from the shelter’s service area. No animal from this service area is ever turned away for any reason.
