Expressing Thanks

Since we recipients did not publicly thank the La Cañada Flintridge Coordinating Council at the ceremony on May 8, I want to take this opportunity to thank them and those who nominated me for the Les Tupper Award.

Standing on stage in the company of the prior recipients and those of that evening, I felt honored and humbled. I have always been a believer of the quote, “To whom much is given, much is expected” (paraphrased from Luke 12:48). Because of blessings from God, I feel I am one of those to whom much has been given, and it makes me happy to give back to my community — a community filled with the good life and good people.

I greatly appreciate the acknowledgement of my volunteer efforts, but I can’t take all the credit by myself because there are always the people who came before me paving the way, and those who stand alongside me getting things done.

A great benefit of volunteering has been the meeting of such incredible people that I am fortunate to count as friends. I want to especially thank my family for being a part of my volunteer team and for being my biggest blessing of all.

Spring Home Tour

As co-chairs of the 2006 7/8 Spring Home tour, we would like to thank the entire community for coming out and supporting this fabulous fundraiser for our middle school. From the homeowners who opened their doors to us, Al Brooks Tickets and Green Street Restaurant, to the underwriters, vendors, countless volunteers and our dedicated committee, we thank you! We appreciate your time, energy and creativity.

Mostly, we thank all of those who attended this year’s tour, making it another great success. We hope you look forward to the 21st Annual Spring Home Tour next year.

The Golden Years

The average age of the population of La Cañada Flintridge has been steadily increasing, but fortunately not as fast as the property values. However, there may be a possible relationship. Very few young people can afford to move to La Cañada Flintridge with the property values at current levels.

Recognizing the aging population and the needs of seniors, Crescenta-Canada Family YMCA has introduced “Senior Community Services.” This program is under the able direction of Nancy Turner, and the AMKiwanians were fortunate to have Ms. Turner as their speaker at their last meeting. Nancy has a B.A. degree in social work from Cal State LA as well as a certificate in gerontology.

All programs and assistance provided by YMCA’s Senior Community Services are free of charge and are available to seniors and family members of residents in Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, North Glendale, Sunland and Tujunga. “Y “ membership is not required.

If you are in need or simply need answers to questions, contact the YMCA at (818) 790-0123, ext. 225, Nancy said.

Typical questions that are being fielded are: What services are available which make living at home more safe for the elderly? Is help available for caregivers? How do you locate local transportation services? When is joining an HMO or taking Medicare Part D advantageous? Do I need a conservator for my parents? Where can I hire a qualified housekeeper?

In the coming months, Senior Community Services will be expanded to include field trips, events and in-house activities. Funding for such programs relies on grants, private contributions and community campaigns. If you would like to contribute to the future of the Senior Program, link to www.ymcacc.org or contact Deborah Weirick, development director, at (818) 790-0123.

Getting old is not something to be dreaded. Being retired gives you time to do things you never did. Mark Twain put it well when he said, “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

Successful Garden Tour

The fourth Annual Spring Garden Tour in La Cañada was a success. Thank you to the Julie and Kevin Abbott, Julio and Annette Ramirez, Mary Beth and Rehman Dittu, Ron Morrow and Sue Stranger for opening their gardens.

Also, thank you to all the volunteers who worked at the event.
