Thomas Ralph Miller
 Tom Miller, a longtime La
Cañada Flintridge resident and
executive director of the Glendale
Community Foundation, died of a
heart attack on Tuesday. He was 51.
Miller moved to Glendale with
his family in 1964 and attended
Balboa Elementary, Toll Junior
High, Hoover High and Glendale
College before graduating from USC. He and his wife, Susanne
Whatley, lived in her childhood
home in LCF with their children.
He worked for the Los Angeles
Herald Examiner and Glendale
Federal Bank prior to taking the
position of executive director for
the Glendale Community
Foundation in 1989. When Miller
started at the Foundation, it had
$1.1 million in assets; it has since
grown to $7.5 million.
Miller was president of the
Kiwanis club of Glendale, and has
been the recipient of numerous
awards including the Raymond D.
Edwards Awards from Glendale
Community College Alumni
Association, Man of the Year (2000)
from the Glendale Chamber of
Commerce, Service to the Arts
Award (1991) from Glendale
Regional Arts Council, and served
as president of the Glendale Estate
Planning Council and chaired the
Glendale Healthy Community
Coalition.
He will be remembered for his
dedicated service to numerous community
organizations including
Glendale Beautiful, the Executive
Toastmasters, Glendale Community Coordinating Council, President’s
Advisory Council, Glendale-
Montrose-Crescenta Valley
Veterans’ Memorial Committee,
Glendale Historical Society and the
Descanso Gardens Guild. He was
also active in the chambers of commerce
for La Cañada Flintridge,
Glendale, Montrose and Crescenta
Valley.
Miller is survived by his wife,
Susanne; his children Holly (age 7)
and April (5); his parents Ralph and
Loretta Miller of Bozeman,
Montana; sister Kathleen Miller of
Palm Desert; and brothers Gary
Miller of Lancaster and Bart Miller
of Wenatchee, Wash.
A memorial service is tentatively
scheduled for next Wednesday,
Dec. 20, at La Cañada Presbyterian
Church at 4 p.m. (Call LCPC for
