Manchester Boddy House as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

The 43rd Pasadena Showcase House of Design will be a collaboration of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) and La Cañada Flintridge’s Descanso Gardens in renovating Descanso’s Boddy House, Benefit Chairman Joy Sullivan said recently.

“This year we had this wonderful possibility to have two local non-profit organizations collaborate on the restoration of an historic house for the benefit of the community,” said Sullivan, who has been involved with PSHA for 20 years. “A gift to the San Gabriel community labeled ‘Do not open ’til springtime’ is a result of a unique, cooperative alliance between these two organizations.”

Sullivan and Descanso Gardens Executive Director David R. Brown began meeting this fall to discuss the concept of partnering and showcasing the E. Manchester Boddy House, a 22-room Hollywood Regency-styled mansion designed by J.E. Dolena and built in 1938 for E. Manchester Boddy and located on the Descanso Gardens property. They believe that this partnership will provide a major contribution to restoration of the estate and, hopefully, entice more visitors not only to the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, but also to Descanso Gardens.

“The timing of this collaboration could not have been better,” Brown siad. “Patrons of PSHA will enjoy both a fabulously designed house and a landscape in full springtime bloom.”

Sullivan is hopeful that this opportunity will aid in her efforts to inform the public and patrons about the music programs funded by the Pasadena Showcase of the Arts. Proceeds from the Showcase House of Design provide prize monies for its annual Instrumental Competition, fund its Music Mobile program and Youth Concert at Disney Hall, and provide major funding for the Los Angeles Philharmonic as well as to other programs that foster an appreciation for symphonic music, youth educational and therapeutic music programs throughout the greater San Gabriel Valley. PSHA has contributed nearly $15 million to these programs since its inception.

The 2007 Showcase House of Design at Descanso Gardens will be open to the public from April 22 through May 20.
