Spartans Win Arroyo Tournament

Adam MalikAdam Malik scored a gamehigh 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, to lead the La Cañada High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 49-37 victory over Mark Keppel and its fourth consecutive Arroyo Invitational Tournament championship last Saturday night in El Monte.

The Spartans trailed, 17-14, at halftime, but battled back in the third quarter and took a 32-27 advantage into the final period, where Malik took over, making all six of his free throws down the stretch.

All-tournament selections Tucker Heaton and Darren Ho added seven and five points, respectively, for LCHS. Garrison Grimes also had five points while Ross Grandolph, Christian Nitu and Jackson Ridd each scored two.

Tucker Heaton“We did a nice job in the second half,” said LCHS Coach Tom Hofman.

LC 77, South Hills 53 — Malik had 36 points and 10 rebounds in the Spartans’ semifinal round victory.

Grandoph had 11 points, Ho scored seven, Nitu and William Baldwin each had five, while Justin Dalley, Heaton, Michael Mikuni and Kyle Johnson also scored.

LC 67, Walnut 46 — Ho and Malik scored 22 and 20 points, respectively.

Baldwin added seven points while Grandolph, Nitu, Ridd and Joy Lelo Alex Ritcheson each scored three. Heaton had two points and Will Omokawa had one.

Darren HoLC 53, Montclair 41 — Malik (15 points) and Ho (13) were the Spartans’ leading scorers in an early round game.

LC 60, Pasadena La Salle 35 — The Spartans followed up their impressive display at Arroyo with a trouncing over the Lancers Tuesday night.

The Spartans (6-0) played tremendous team defense and were once again led offensively by Malik.

After helping hold the Lancers to 30 percent shooting in the first half, giving the Spartans a 33-17 halftime lead, Malik scored 12 of his game-high 23 in the third period and put the Lancers away for good.

Malik finished the game 10 of 13 from the floor and sat out the entire fourth quarter.
