LCHS Girls' Soccer

Spartans In League’s Top Spot

Colleen Boyd (white jersey), a returning All-Rio Hondo League selection, has helped the Spartans to a 3-0-1 league record.

The La Cañada High School girls’ varsity soccer team maintained its spot atop the Rio Hondo League standings with a 3-0 victory over San Marino, followed by a scoreless tie at South Pasadena last week.

In the victory over San Marino, La Cañada’s defense played exceptionally well despite the return of their opponent’s star striker.

LC’s Jenelle Rotenberg, Jessica Pih, Amanda Gartside, Nicki Nathan, Thalia Gomez and Jeannie Wojslaw shut down the Titans’ offense and allowed no shots on goal.

Offensively, Millie Beebee led the team with two scores and an assist. Nancy Avesyan assisted on both goals by Beebee, who also returned the favor on Avesyan’s score.

The Spartans (9-4-2 overall, 3-0-1 league record) overcame injuries and illnesses to battle South Pasadena to a 0-0 tie last Friday. LC’s best scoring opportunity may have been Avesyan’s breakway shot, which was stopped by the Tigers’ goalie on a splendid effort.

“I am extremely proud of our girls,” LCHS coach Louie Bilowitz said. “Despite the situations, the girls stepped up and battled a tough South Pasadena squad. We had the only legitimate chances to score but some games are like that.

“This is a young team with no senior starters and the experience of this game will only help us in the long run. Hopefully the outcome will be different in February when we play them on our turf field that is best suited for our style of soccer.

“However, the team showed tremendous character and several girls such as Kelly Streeter, Brooke Williams, Caroline Na, Christene Ghazarian and Kat Chew played their best games of the season. Goalkeepers Colleen Boyd and Anya Rosen shared the shutout.

“Of note was Jenelle Rotenberg, who was suffering from intense back spasms, coming in and out of the game and playing in pain. That is the epitome of the character of the entire team and I was more proud of the team in this tie than any game we had won this season.”

LC’s Jenelle Rotenberg (8) has returned from an injury and could be a key in helping Coach Louie Bilowitz’s Spartans contend for the Rio Hondo League championship.
