Firefighters at Los Angeles
County Fire Station 82 are currently
sleeping in two trailers parked in the
station’s parking lot while the old
sleeping quarters in the station are
being remodeled. They also have a
temporary restroom facility
attached to the trailers.
The station was built in 1956,
and the 51-year-old sleeping quarters
was one large dorm with one
shower. The new sleeping quarters
will include four separate sleeping
areas, four showers and more restrooms.
“With 10 to 14 firefighters here
on a shift and one shower, getting
everyone showered takes some
time,” said Captain Sal Chavez.
“Currently we have two female firefighters
on one shift and three on
another shift. When the old quarters
were built, it did not take them into
account. Everyone here is anxious
for the remodel to be completed.”
The exterior construction is
done, including installation of new
windows. The interior electrical is
underway.
Currently, at night when there is
a call, the firefighters must run from
the trailers to the trucks and engine
house located in the firehouse. |
