Letters to the Editor
Democrats and
Republicans
Inherently the
Same
Today, I opened the paper and
came across Bob Tanabe’s letter
accusing Democrats, like myself, of
being traitors (“A Republican Point of
View,” Nov. 1). As far as I can tell, Mr.
Tanabe’s oft-published letters are not
written to inform or convince, but
merely to hurl ill-informed, childish
insults at approximately half of La
Cañada Flintridge.
Enough.
You don’t know me, Mr. Tanabe.
You know nothing about my beliefs,
my life or my political opinions.
Despite what you have written in your
letter, you certainly don’t “know” that
my heroes are Fidel Castro and Kim Jong Il, that I wish harm on our
troops, or that I want to convert
America to a Communist-style dictatorship,
because all of these are
patently false. In fact, I don’t know
any Democrats who espouse these
views, and I doubt you do, either.
Honestly, Mr. Tanabe, have you no
decency? You owe me an apology for
these execrable insults, sir, and if you
are a gentleman I hope to receive one.
Yes, I am a Democrat, one of
many in LCF. We take pride in our
community, home and family, just like
Republicans do. We help our children
with homework and cheer them on
during soccer games, just like
Republicans do. We share holidays
and celebrations with family and
friends, just like Republicans do. We
work hard, save money and pay our
mortgages, just like Republicans do.
We care deeply about the future of our
nation and our world, just like
Republicans do. We are your neighbors,
friends, family and co-workers,
and like all Americans, share our lives
with people of all political persuasions.
We may debate the best path forward
for America, but that does not
mean that we must lose respect and
civility toward one another.
America faces many challenges,
and we will not overcome them by
demonizing one another.
I cannot begin to imagine why you
feel the need to spew this vicious, easily
disproved invective that serves
only to divide Americans against one
another. However, what is even more
mysterious is why the Outlook continues
to allow you to embarrass yourself
by publishing it.
