Descanso Hosting Winter’ Event Dec. 15-16

Mediterranean Winter is the theme for Descanso Gardens’ weekend celebration on Dec. 15-16. The Center Circle display garden will be filled with seasonal plants from five Mediterranean zones: Coastal California, Southwest Australia, the Mediterranean coastal basin, Central Chile and western South Africa.

Highlights of the upcoming twoday celebration include:

• Holiday Spirit Display and Sale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — This new holiday tradition combines creative gardening, gift-giving and goodwill. Local members of the gardening community have created and donated dozens of plantings that can be viewed and purchased at the Boddy House Terrace. All proceeds go toward supporting garden operations. A free tram will be available all weekend to take you up to the house.

• Enchanted Railroad, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Descanso Gardens’ Enchanted Railroad is specially decorated for the holidays. It’s a fun way to see the Gardens from a new perspective. The ride fee is $3.

• Santa in the Garden, noon to 4:30 p.m. — Santa makes an appearance in the Gardens’ Rose Pavilion. Attendees are able to take memorable pictures at this photo op. It is free with Descanso Gardens admission.

• Boddy House Sneak Peek, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — A behind-the-scenes view of the interior of the Boddy House as the Heritage Exhibit nears completion. This will be the last opportunity to see the house until March 2008 when the exhibit will be open for touring. A free tram will be available all weekend for transportation to the house. Free with Gardens admission.

• Descanso Gardens Craft Sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Descanso Gardens Guild volunteers will be selling their handmade crafts to benefit the Gardens.

Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive. The Gardens are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Christmas Day. Parking is free. Admission fees are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, $2 for children 5 to 12, and free for members and children 5 and younger. Fees for classes and programs include Gardens admission.
