Dreier’s Energy
Policy
We should all be thankful that
Congressman David Dreier took
part in the energy protests in
Washington last week. He was part
of the group of House Republicans
calling on House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi to end her decision to block
any vote on the American Energy
Act.
In an election year, it is not difficult
to understand why the speaker
does not want to hold a vote on the
only meaningful energy legislation
currently proposed. It is clear that
we need a different energy policy. In
the early 1970’s, the U.S. produced
about 70% of its oil consumption
and imported about 30%. Today, we
import about 60%. As people struggle
with the high cost of gasoline,
we not only need a viable solution to
the energy problem, but also a longterm
one. Does anyone think that the
price of oil will decline if we do not
decrease our dependence on foreign
sources? Those foreign sources also
control its price.
Dreier and his colleagues are
right. We need to do it all — conservation,
alternatives and exploration.
We should thank Congressman
Dreier for considering us over politics.
