Hernandez To Receive LCFEF’s Top Award
at
Major Donor Reception
The La Cañada Flintridge
Educational Foundation (LCFEF), a
non-profit volunteer organization
dedicated to raising money each year
for the La Cañada public schools,
will be holding its annual Major
Donor Reception on Thursday, Oct.
2, to thank donors who gave $1,000
or more in the 2007-08 school year.
At the event, Kathy Hernandez
will receive LCFEF’s prestigious
“Spirit of Outstanding Service
Award,” recognizing her exceptional
record of inspirational leadership in
the community. The reception, which
is hosted by the LCFEF board of
directors and the LCFEF Endowment
Fund trustees, will be held from 5:30
to 7:30 p.m. at the La Cañada home
of Kathleen and Geoff Bywater.
“Honoring our most generous
donors and one of the shining lights
of our community is a privilege and a
pleasure,” said LCFEF President
Deborah Weirick. “We are so fortunate
to have Kathy Hernandez as a
member of the La Cañada community.
Our schools and our children have
been greatly enriched by all that she
has done through her volunteer work,
including having served as president
of our organization. She’s a role
model for all of us, as are the donors who make a significant financial
commitment to us each year.
Without their support, we wouldn’t
be able to provide the programs and
funding that make our schools as
special as they are.”
Hernandez has served in key
volunteer roles in the LCF community,
lending her unique expertise in
both technical and communication
skills. She served as PTA president
at Palm Crest and at LCHS 7/8, and
is in her second year as vice president of communications for the LCHS 9-12 PTSA, a role she held at the 7/8 as well.
She is a past president of the LCFEF and
served on its board for five years.
In addition to having a flourishing website
design business, Hernandez is an active
volunteer at La Cañada Presbyterian
Church, where she maintains the Outreach
section of the church website and helps
organize Growing Families programs. In
addition to these formal positions,
Hernandez gives Internet safety talks to
local parent groups and has served her children’s
sports teams countless times. She is
a two-time PTA Founders Day Award winner.
Having received her BS and MS in
industrial engineering from Stanford,
Hernandez is active in her college alumni
association, where she sits on the board of
governors of the Stanford Associates. She
has served many years on the board of
Stanford Professional Women of Los
Angeles County, and has acted as the class
of 1985 correspondent for the last 20 years.
Hernandez and her husband, Don,
moved to La Cañada 12 years ago, and their
children have attended local public schools
since kindergarten. Their children both
attend La Cañada High School, where
Kristen is a junior and Stephen is a sophomore.
“I’m extremely honored to receive this
award,” said Hernandez. “I wish I could
divide it up among the many talented, dedicated
volunteers I’ve worked with over the
years. It’s not only fun to work with these
folks, but it’s rewarding knowing that our
efforts help make our local schools so outstanding.”
The “Spirit of Outstanding Service
Award” will be presented to Hernandez at
the Major Donor Reception to be held in
the lovely gardens of the newly built
French country home of local residents
Kathleen and Geoff Bywater.
Catering for the Oct. 2 reception is
being donated by Porto’s Bakery and will
feature festive Cuban fare. The Portos, with
renowned eateries in Glendale and
Burbank, are a local school family. Mojitos
will be the perfect accompaniment to the
Cuban menu. For those who prefer wine,
Peachy Canyon Winery selections will be
offered.
Guests will enjoy live music provided
by members of the La Cañada High School
Band, featuring a brass quintet, a sax quartet,
and a flute quarter.
