Hillside School’s Construction
Project Nearly Complete

Hillside School and Learning Center began adding nearly 500 square feet to its building by expanding the individual tutoring room and adding a snack shop during the summer. It is an effort to meet the increased student demand for its programs and to improve the student environment.

In addition to the new construction, other projects are slated for completion this fall. These projects include re-painting the inside, retiling the front porch, re-designing the two back patios, creating concrete walkways, renovating the inside of the caboose and re-landscaping the student common area.

“When we first moved into our facility on Oak Grove Drive, we believed we had a 10-year period before we would need to expand, but the growth has been so dramatic over the last eight years that we needed to do something sooner,” said Hillside Executive Director Bob Frank.

Hillside is a community educational resource for students who may need a smaller class environment for learning, one-on-one educational support, or make-up high school classes. Hillside serves all ages of students with different educational needs.

“Summer school alone has grown exponentially, which placed an increasing demand on the facilities,” Frank said. “Luckily the board was forward thinking in planning for this expansion and the money has been quietly raised over the last few years to fund the additions. We now need about $80,000 to complete the smaller projects we have slated but we feel very confident we will meet this goal through our annual fund drive which kicks off in October.”

Hillside has a committed donor who will match up to a $25,000 contribution to Hillside. “This would help ensure the completion of all the additional projects,” said Hillside Chairman Bryan Herrmann.

None of this would have been possible without support from the community. “Hillside would particularly like to thank Jay Johnson of Jay Johnson Architect for designing the additions, Mark Snashall of Chelsea Construction for building and maintaining the addition on budget, and the building department of La Cañada Flintridge for their cooperation and helpfulness in ushering the project through the proper steps for approval,” Frank said. “This is very exciting for all of us and will help us continue to meet the educational needs of the students in the community.”
