Spartans Snap Lengthy Winless Streak

La Cañada’s Sean Denney caught two touchdown passes to help the Spartans defeat Firebaugh, 35-8, last Friday.

The La Cañada High School varsity football team turned in a fine performance and collected its first victory of the season last Friday.

The Spartans’ 35-8 non-league win over visiting Lynwood Firebaugh snapped a 10-game winless streak dating back to last year. (Their previous victory was a 19-7 decision at Gabrielino High of San Gabriel on Sept. 21, 2007.)

La Cañada’s winless streak was the longest in 34 years, dating to when the Spartans failed to collect a victory in 13 consecutive games between 1972 and 1974.

LC’s Rocky Moore completed five of seven passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns against Firebaugh, a new school which is in its first year of varsity football competition.

The Spartans, whose overall record improved to 1-3, jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, with wide receiver Sean Denney catching 32- and 10-yard touchdown passes.

Michael Weston had a team-high four receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown for LCHS.

Brian Veeh led the Spartans’ rushing attack with 44 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Andrew Kim gained 36 yards on two carries, and Luis Carrasquero had 12 yards and a touchdown.

Chris Gilbert led all LCHS defenders with 14 tackles and Allen Chu finished with 13. Weston had 11 tackles, Kim finished with eight, and Mario Gonzalez, Kevin Hurlbutt, Denney and Veeh contributed five.

The Spartans will travel to El Monte to face Arroyo High School on Friday, Oct. 10, in a nonleague game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
