Once again, 14-year-old John Geyer had the winning form at last month's Amateur Athletic Union's Junior Olympic diving national championships in Largo, Fla.
In the age 14-15 group, the La Caņada Flintridge resident placed second on the two-meter dive, performing a reverse two-and-a-half tuck. Following his front two-and-a-half pike off the 25-foot high platform and one his two-and-a-half tuck in the one-meter dive, Geyer placed third in each event. He competed against two dozen other divers.
"The atmosphere was great and I had a lot of fun," Geyer said. "I just did everything I've been practicing. I felt my platform dive was my best dive."
Three of his teammates from the Rose Bowl Aquatics Club attended the meet with him.
"He dove beautifully," said Mary Geyer, his mother.
This was the first meet the AAU has held since 1979, although it was established in 1888 and is regarded by many to have set the standards for amateur sports in the United States.
Although he usually practices at least two hours a day, five to six days a week, Geyer is currently enjoying a two-week break, getting ready to return to La Caņada High School where he will be a member of the school's swimming and water polo teams.
Geyer, who has been diving for nine years, continues to work toward his dream of qualifying to be a member of the United States Olympic team.
