Shupper Repeats as
IEL Division Champion

Emma Shupper, a La Cañada Flintridge resident, won the IEL
division title.
For the second year in a row,
local equestrian rider Emma
Shupper won a division title in the
highly competitive Interscholastic
Equestrian League (IEL).
Riding for The Waverly
School, Shupper — who captured
the Novice Division
Championship during the 2007-
08 season — moved up to the
Freshman Division and captured
first place in the division championship
held last month.
Shupper, 13, lives in La
Cañada Flintridge, and will ride
for the Westridge School in the
fall. In addition to the freshman
championship, Shupper was the
overall individual high-point
champion and individual reserve
high-point champion at two of the
four shows. Points are based on
all the IEL riders participating,
regardless of division.
There were 429 middle school
and high school riders from 70
schools who competed in this
year’s event.
Shupper started riding at age
7. She credits Lynaro Oldenburg,
who competes in hunter, equitation
and dressage, with a lot of
her success.
“I owe a lot to Lynaro, he
always gives me 110% and never
lets me down,” said Shupper, who
also credits her long-time trainer,
Deirdra Davis, at Hansen Dam.
“I would be nowhere without
my trainer, and all of my friends
at the barn,” she added.
Shupper will ride in the U.S.
Hunter/Jumper Association’s
Emerging Athletes Training
Program on May 9-10. As one of
24 junior riders chosen from
Southern California and Nevada,
Shupper will participate in a training
and horsemanship session
with Olympic gold medalist and
commentator Melanie Taylor.
Shupper will be joined by another
La Cañada Flintridge rider, Olivia
Champ.
