Spartans Perform Well in Meets

La Canada High School cross-country runners continued preseason in Crescenta Valley Park at a non-league contest among six Southern California schools. Keeping with the meet's preseason intent, team scores were not posted.

The varsity boys looked impressive as their top five finishers posted times which were within 38 seconds of one another: Will Zentmyer (17:10), Jake Matthews (17:20), Chris Bruegge (17:36), Austin Facer (17:38) and Paul Park (17:48). Jonathan White led the freshmen with his 20:47.

The La Canada girls' varsity team was sparked by Morgan Sheppard (junior, 20:31), Molly Scott (freshman, 21:37) and Lindsay Mayer (senior, 21:50). Three sophomores posted the next best times: Erika Hennon (22:38), Kristin Tisdale (22:41) and Mandy Herrmann (22:42).

Ten Spartans posted personal course records: Megan Cho, Haley Falk, Abe Frandsen, Mandy Herrmann, Eleanor Jaeger, Jake Mattews, Paul Park, Kevin Skolnik, Chris Walker and Zach Wetzel.

The Spartans open their league season today at Lower Arroyo Park and Saturday at the Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational Meet at Griffith Park.

The La Canada High School cross-country teams concluded their preseason at the 25th running of the Woodbridge High School Invitational in Irvine. While both the girls' and boys' teams turned in strong performances, the day was highlighted by two individual performances from the varsity boys.

Just five days before their first league meet, Spartan runners competed in eight races, each consisting of runners from a specific grade. With varsity runners divided among the separate races, the emphasis was very much on individual times.

Capping the day was Will Zentmyer's second place finish in the sophomore boy's race. Zentmyer dueled with San Diego's Juan Martinez for the entire three miles, succumbing only in the final few yards. His time, 15:49, is La Canada's fastest boys Woodbridge time in the past six years. Likewise, Jake Matthews turned in an impressive time, 16:11, as he placed fourth in the junior boys' race. Sub-18 minute performances were also run by Austin Facer (senior, 16:41), Chris Walker (sophomore, 17:26) and Zach Wetzel (sophomore, 17:50). Jonathan White led the freshman boys with his 19:30.

Morgan Sheppard paced the Lady Spartans as she finished third in the junior girls race in 19:43. Nearly breaking twenty minutes, Molly Scott ran 20:01 while snagging third place in the freshman girl's race. Other top girls' times were provided by Lindsay Mayer (senior, 20:32), Erika Hannon (sophomore, 20:35) and sophomores Kristen Tisdale and Mandy Herrmann (both 21:35).

Personal course records were posted by sixteen Spartans: Jason Chen, Megan Cho, Austin Facer, Abe Frandsen, Hayley Falk, Jim Gilbert, Bren GrandPre, Erika Hennon, Eleanor Jeager, Stephanie Koo, Jake Matthews, Alex Seastrom-Probandt, Kevin Skolnik, Chris Walker, Zack Wetzel and Will Zentmyer.
