La Caņada Flintridge resident Alyssa Chin, a swimmer who recently earned her degree from the University of Nevada at Reno, was selected the state winner of the NCAA Woman of the Year award for Nevada.
Chin, a La Caņada High School graduate, will be one of 51 women considered for the National NCAA Woman of the Year award. Ten finalists will be selected later this month; the winner will be announced Oct. 29.
The award recognizes outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership.
Chin is one of Nevada's top 10 swimmers in nine individual swimming events and seven relay events. She has been selected as the WAC swimmer of the week seven times in her career and finished in the top 10 in WAC championships 24 times. She also was presented with the Ruth Russell Award by her university's athletic department.
Chin served two years as the Student Athlete Advisory Council president and volunteered with the Choices Driven campaign, a program in which college athletes consult with youngsters to help them make important life choices.
"I worked hard and everything just fell into place," said Chin, who was a four-year swimming and diving letter winner.
After graduating from college with a journalism degree, Chin joined KRNV Channel 4 in Reno as a full-time camera person.
"I was so honored just to have been nominated for the award," she said. "Never in a million years did I think I was going to win."
