LCF Prepares to
Remember in September
The city of La Cañada
Flintridge will celebrate its community
identity on the weekend of
Sept. 10, when the city’s unique zip
code—91011—coincides with the
date 9/10/11. The citywide “9.10.11
in 91011” commemoration will give
residents an opportunity to connect
with their neighbors, the community
and its institutions. The weekend’s
events will reflect the theme
“Celebrate, Connect and
Remember.”
“An off-the-cuff observation
about the oddity of a date matching
a zip code, a unique zip code at that,
has grown into a really exciting
community event,” said Todd
Andrews, chair of the 9.10.11 in
91011 organizing committee. “The
city council immediately engaged
and supported the idea when a number
of organizations pulled together
in a true grassroots effort. The
weekend will be a lot of fun and I
encourage everyone to mark their
calendars for those days and keep an
eye out for further details as our
planning comes together.”
The weekend’s events will begin
with a celebration in Memorial Park
on Friday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 7:30
p.m. Residents are encouraged to
pack a picnic, grab take-out from a
favorite local restaurant or purchase
dinner from several gourmet food
trucks at the park and settle in for an
evening of musical entertainment
including LCF’s band Misplaced
Priorities. The event will remind
locals of Music in the Park, one of
the community’s favorite summer
traditions.
Events scheduled for Saturday,
Sept. 10, are intended to encourage
residents to explore their local community
and seek ways to give back.
In the morning, some of the city’s
iconic organizations will offer an
insider’s view with a variety of open houses. Participating organizations
include the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, Verdugo Hills
Hospital, the La Cañada
Flintridge Tournament of Roses
Association, Descanso Gardens,
Crescenta Cañada Family
YMCA, Lanterman House,
Assistance League of Flintridge,
the Flintridge Riding Club and
the La Cañada Thursday Club.
On Saturday, LCF residents
will also be encouraged to volunteer
an hour or more working for
one of several organizations such
as the La Cañada Flintridge
Trails Council, the La Cañada
Flintridge Tournament of Roses
Association, the Community
Center of La Cañada Flintridge
or La Cañada Valley Beautiful.
Churches and service organizations
are encouraged to organize
their own service projects for
that day.
Local businesses will sponsor
a Zip-Along-the-Boulevard
event that will run throughout
Saturday. Merchants and restaurateurs
will offer special sales,
promotions, giveaway drawings
and menus, all focused on the
theme “9.10.11 in 91011.”
On Saturday evening, several
LCF restaurants will set aside
a “community table” for locals
who are open to meeting new
friends over a good meal in a
relaxed atmosphere. Each participating
restaurant will put its
own spin on the evening with
special menu items, unique settings,
surprises from the chef or
prizes and promotions.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, the
tenth anniversary of the
September 11 attacks, the city
will sponsor a day of remembrance
with a non-denominational
observance at 2:30 p.m. in
the courtyard of La Cañada
Presbyterian Church.
Members of the “9.10.11 in
91011” organizing committee
include Chamber President &
CEO Pat Anderson, Kim
Beattie, YMCA; Martha Burns,
