La Cañada Flintridge 16-andunder
softball team, the LC
Wildfire, recently finished third in
the State Western ‘B’ district
touranement in Palmdale to qualify
for nationals in Arizona, which
began earlier this week.
The Wildfire won four of six
games and outscored opponents 29-
18.
Solid pitching from Shiyin Lim
and a slew of extra base hits propelled
the local squad to a 7-5 victory.
Annie Monroe hit a home run
and a double, Olivia Leyva tripled
and Michelle Grochow finished with
a double. Shelly Musso and Katy
Lee contributed singles and each
scored one run. Trailing 5-0,
Downey scored five runs to cut the
deficit, but Maddy Mackenzie
diminished any hope of a comeback.
The Wildfire went on to defeat
Pico, 7-0. Mackenzie and Lim combined
to pitch a two-hit shutout, and
teammate Brenna Gay collected
three hits and scored a run. Kelly
Berg hit an RBI single and teammates
Clair O’Connor and Raliegh
Scharre turned in stellar performances
behind the plate.
La Cañada suffered a setback in
the quarterfinals, falling to La
Verne, 4-3, in extra innings. But the
Spartans bounced back to defeat
Sylmar, 3-1, and Chino Hills, 7-1, to
clinch a semifinal berth.
Playing its sixth game in three
days, the Wildfire needed another
victory to advance to the championship
game. One tough inning in
which La Verne scored four runs
proved to be too much. La Cañada
fell to La Verne, 5-1.
